Welfare state in decline - Reforms for a more democratic and sustainable economy.
In his lecture the internationally renowned political economist Robin Hahnel looked at the birth and decline of welfare states. He introduced both short and longer term reforms for structures maintaining well-being, with his focal idea being the pursuit of a community more supportive of democratic ideals and ecological sustainability.
Commentary remarks were made by Jan Otto Andersson.

Professor Guy Standing from the University of Bath gave the fourth Kela Lecture.

Professor Paul Bernard
The lecture dealt with the connections between notions of social development, lifecourse and welfare regimes. The connections were illustrated with relevant empirical material, and the policy implications are explored.

Dr. Paul Bernard is a professor of sociology in the University of Montreal whose research interests centre on lifecourse issues, welfare regimes and the connections between social policy and health. His latest publications include Social Mobility, the Lifecourse Approach and Welfare Pillars, and Pillars and Regimes: The Evolution of Welfare States as seen through the Luxembourg Income Study data.
