ID card with health insurance data

You can have your health insurance data included on your identity card, which is issued by the police. This allows your ID card to function in the same way as your Kela card. However, an indication of your pensioner status cannot be included on the identity card.

The identity card is valid for five years and must be applied for in person from the police. When applying, be sure to bring the following:

  • your passport or other proof of identity
  • 40 euros in cash and
  • two passport-sized photos (see photo guidelines)

If your health insurance details change while the identity card is valid, you must renew your card. The renewal costs 40 euros.

The identity card can be used as a travel document in many European countries and as authentication when logging into various government online services.
