When the child starts pre-school or school

If mother's or father's maximum average working hours are 30 per week due to child care Kela may pay part-time care allowance for that period. Permission for partial care leave is always requested from the employer. Eligibility for the leave is based on employment legislation and Kela is not responsible for it.

If the child is enrolled in extended compulsory education, the parent may receive partial care allowance already during pre-school.

Private pre-school

When a child starts pre-school and also attends private day care (e.g. in private club), Kela can pay private day care allowance. The amount depends on whether the pre-school is organised by the local authority or a private provider. Care supplement is also affected by the family's income. The home municipality may also pay a municipal supplement. Further information is available on the municipality's website or by calling the customer service for families with children. Kela does not pay private day care allowance for school-age children.
