High medicine expences

You can receive an additional reimbursement for medicine expenses that exceed an annual out-of-pocket limit of EUR 670 year (700.92 year 2012). If your medicine expenses in a calendar year exceed this treshold, the exceeding part is reimbursed in full. A EUR 1.50 copayment applies to each purchase made after you have reached the treshold.

To qualify for a reimbursement, you must take the medicine as instructed and purchase it for 3 months' use at a time.

Your medicine expenses are tracked by Kela. Once you have exceeded the limit for additional reimbursement, Kela will send you a letter informing you of this, accompanied by a separate notification for the pharmacy. Keep the notification and present it at the pharmacy when purchasing medicines.

How to claim

  • If the reimbursement is not credited directly at the pharmacy, you claim it from Kela by using the form SV 178 (in Finnish).
  • Enclose to the application receipts of the medicine purchases.
  • The claim must be made within 6 months of the end of the calendar year when you exceeded the limit.
