Parental allowance

The parental allowance system is being reformed - are you on the right page?

The information on this page applies to your family if:

  • the estimated due date of your baby is before 4 September 2022
  • you are adopting and the child will be placed in your care on or before 30 July 2022.

Click here for further information on parental allowances when the estimated due date of the baby is on or after 4 September 2022.

Both parents can take parental leave. During the parental leave, Kela pays parental allowance for 158 working days (about half a year). Working days are Monday to Saturday, with the exception of official holidays.

Your child will be about 9 months old when your entitlement to the parental allowance ends. Payment will end sooner if you begin to receive maternity or paternity on account of the birth of another child.

Period of payment

Use the parental allowance calculator to see the period for which you can get parental allowance.

The parental allowance is paid for more than 158 working days if the child was born before payment of the maternity allowance began. In that case, payment of the parental allowance is extended by as many days as the maternity allowance period was brought forward.

Mothers who are raising a child on their own can receive parental allowance for an additional 54. The extension is available only if paternity has not been confirmed and the mother does not have a spouse or partner who is entitled to paternity allowance.

File your claim at least a month before the payment of the parental allowance is set to start.

Parental leave is for both parents

Parents can agree between themselves how to use the parental leave entitlement. They can split the parental leave, or only one parent can go on leave.

They cannot both be on parental leave at the same time (with the exception of parents of multiple births). Each parent can take their parental leave in one or two blocks of time.
