Do you get private day care allowance? Notify Kela of changes in the care arrangements for the summer

Published 26/5/2025

Parents who receive private day care allowance payments must notify Kela of any changes in their child care arrangements during the summer or early autumn. Such changes may be relevant to the payment of the allowance. The notification can be made conveniently in the OmaKela e-service.

If a family gets private day care allowance, Kela must be notified of changes in the care arrangements for the child for the summer and early autumn. Changes to the child care arrangements should be notified as soon as possible, so that Kela can pay the correct amount of allowance. Usual changes to the care arrangements include

•    changes in the time that the child spends in care
•    changes in the day care fee
•    changes in day care site or provider, especially if the care relationship ends
•    the child starts early childhood education arranged by the municipality
•    the child starts preschool.

The notification is not needed if there is no change in the child care arrangements during the summer or early autumn. It is also not needed if the child attends municipal early childhood education or if the family gets child home care allowance.

Kela pays private day care allowance on the basis of the care agreement. The maximum amount of the allowance is equal to the agreed day care fee. The allowance is in all cases paid directly to the provider of early childhood education. The customer must notify Kela of any changes in time, so that the allowance can be paid to the correct amount.

Even if there is a change in the time that the child spends in care or the child is temporarily away from early childhood education during the summer, Kela can continue to pay the private day care allowance to the provider of early childhood education. The parents and the provider of early childhood education can agree that the family’s part of the total fee for the care is waived for the period that the change is valid.

Notification of changes can be submitted conveniently online

The notification can be submitted by sending a message in the OmaKela e-service. You can also notify us of the changes by calling our customer service number 020 634 2550.
