Amount and payment

The unemployment benefit paid by Kela amounts to EUR 32.40 per day. The benefit is paid for five days per week (including mid-week holidays).

If you meet the criteria for activity, you can receive unemployment benefit at the full amount. The activity is monitored in periods of 65 days of payment. The criteria for activity are met if you, over the course of a single payment period, have been in salaried employment for at least 18 hours or have earned an income of at least EUR 245,64 from self-employment, or if you have participated in five days of employment-promoting services or some other employment-promoting activity arranged by the TE Services.

In the case of salaried employment, the working hours needed to meet the work requirement and thus the criteria for activity can be accrued for example during one week, four weeks or during the whole 65-day payment period.

Report the time of employment on the employment status report. Kela checks whether the criteria for activity are met and pays the benefit accordingly.

If you do not meet the criteria for activity, the benefit amount of EUR 32.40 is reduced by 4.65% for the next 65 days of payment. This corresponds to approximately one day's unemployment benefit during the period of payment, for example 4 weeks. The unemployment benefit is again paid to its former amount from the beginning of the following reference period if the criteria for activity are met.

Informal caregivers and family caregivers as well as unemployed persons who receive a benefit on the basis of incapacity for work or disability are not included in the activation model. Showing activity is also not required when an application for disability pension is pending or if you have been temporarily laid off for a short period. In such situations, the unemployment benefit is thus not reduced.

If you are an informal caregiver or a family caregiver or if your application for disability pension is pending or if you are temporarily laid off for a short period, you should report it in the employment status report. Kela already has the relevant information if a benefit is paid on the basis of incapacity for work or disability. Such data thus do not have to be reported.

Increases

The unemployment benefit is increased if you care for children under the age of 18 years. The child increase amounts to

  • EUR 5.23 per day for one child
  • EUR 7.68 per day in total for two children
  • EUR 9.90 per day in total for three or more children

The child increase is payable starting from the birth of the child. You are also entitled to child increase for your spouse's/partner's under-age children if they life in the same household.

During participation in employment promoting services, the unemployment benefit can be paid at an increased rate for up to 200 days. The increase is EUR 4.74 per day.

Without increases, the amount of the unemployment benefit is on average EUR 697 per month (21.5 x EUR 32.40). You must pay tax on the unemployment benefit.

You can estimate the allowance due to you by means of a calculator application. Your income affects the amount of the unemployment benefit.

Kela pays the benefit on the basis of the unemployment status report
