Handling applications from persons who also have coverage from abroad sometimes requires Kela to contact foreign social security institutions. This may slow down the processing of the application. Customers can facilitate the processing by providing all relevant information with their applications and sending in requested documents promptly.
Obtaining a reimbursement for the cost of medical treatment obtained abroad may take several months. Processing times for pension applications including coverage earned outside Finland are also significantly longer than in cases where all of the coverage was earned in Finland. Whenever an applicant has pension entitlements from several systems, national pensions are the last to be decided. Before they can be decided, Kela must wait for confirmation of periods of insurance completed abroad or in the Finnish earnings-related pension system and for equivalent decisions made on applications for pension from abroad or the Finnish earnings-related pension system.
