Calculation formula

You can estimate the amount of the national pension in the following way:

The full amount of the national pension is reduced by half of the difference between the applicant's earnings-related pensions and the income limit for entitlement to a full national pension. The calculation formula cannot be used if you have lived or worked abroad. Contact Kela (About Kela section) to get information about how residence abroad affects the amount of the national pension.

Calculation formula for persons who live alone: EUR 775.70 – (gross earnings-related pensions – EUR 65.62) : 2

For persons living together with another person: EUR 692.54 – (gross earnings-related pensions – EUR 65.62) : 2

Example 1

Mirja and Matti live together as an unmarried couple. Matti receives an earnings-related pension of EUR 850 per month, while Mirja's pension totals EUR 500 per month (both amounts are before taxes).

• Matti's national pension: EUR 692.54 – (EUR 850EUR 65.62) : 2 = EUR 300
• Mirja's national pension: EUR 692.54 – (EUR 500EUR 65.62) : 2 = EUR 475

Matti will receive a national pension of about EUR 300 and Mirja a national pension of about EUR 475 per month. Neither qualifies for a guarantee pension.

Example 2

Kalle and Kaisa are married. Kalle receives an earnings-related pension of EUR 1.450 per month. He does not qualify for a national pension.

Kaisa has spent many years looking after their children at home. Her earnings-related pension only comes to about EUR 500 per month. Her national pension amounts to about EUR 475 per month. In total, Kaisa receives EUR 975 per month in pensions. She does not qualify for a guarantee pension.

Example 3

Maija is born in September 1959 and she retires on an earning-related pension at age 64 years and 3 months in January 2024. Her earnings-related pension comes to EUR 700 per month. She applies for a national pension immediately.

Maija lives alone and receives a national pension of about EUR 441.98 per month. Her national pension will be 3.6 % (EUR 16.51 per month) smaller than it would be had she taken it out at age 65. Her pensions come to about EUR 1,142 per month in total. She does not qualify for a guarantee pension.
