Maintenance assistance

Kela can pay maintenance assistance for eligible children on behalf of conscripts who are liable for monthly child support payments under a court order or a written agreement confirmed by the municipal social welfare services, and are unable to make such payments while performing their service. The maintenance assistance is paid at the same amount as the child support.

Only the conscript's own income affects the amount of the maintenance assistance. There is, however, an exempt amount of €300 on wage and salary income and income from self-employment. This means that the conscript can earn EUR 300 per month net, i.e. after deduction of taxes, without it affecting the allowance. The monthly income exceeding the exempt amount reduces the amount of the allowance by an amount equal to the net income.

Kela does not pay basic assistance for children entitled to maintenance assistance.
