The statistics on child benefit describe the child benefits paid out by Kela. They provide statistical data on recipient families, qualifying children and expenditure.

Data content

Recipients of child benefit (families), children eligible for child benefit and expenditure on benefits.

Classifications used

Number of children in family, birth order of the eligible child, type of family, recipient, general regional classifications, demographic classifications.

Data collection methods and data sources

The statistics are compiled from an individual-level registry on child benefits. They are produced from the benefit system for child benefits, which includes all the data created and processed during the implementation of the child benefit scheme.

Updating frequency

Published monthly and yearly.

Time of completion or release

Data are made available in the Kelasto statistical database within four weeks of the end of the reference period.

Time series

Kela has published child benefit statistics since assuming responsibility for the scheme from the municipal social welfare boards on 1 January 1993. The effect of legislative amendments should be noted when making year-to-year comparisons.
