How to apply for a European Health Insurance Card

Apply for a European Health Insurance Card via OmaKela

Apply now
  1. Apply for a European Health Insurance Card via our e-service OmaKela. The service is in Finnish and Swedish only.
    • You can also apply via OmaKela for a European Health Insurance Card for your child.
  2. Another way to apply is to call Kela at 020 634 2650.
  3. The card will be mailed to your home address within two weeks.

You can also complete and print out the application form for the European Health Insurance Card (SV193e, PDF) and mail it to Kela, PL 10, 00056 KELA.

Temporary certificate

If you cannot get a European Health Insurance Card card in time for your travel and you need it while abroad, you can ask Kela for a certificate that temporarily replaces the card. You can request the certificate by calling Kela’s customer service number or by visiting a Kela office. The certificate is valid for the duration of the stay abroad, but at the most for six months.

Your card is renewed automatically

The European Health Insurance Card is valid for a maximum of two years. Kela will send you a new card automatically if you are still covered for health insurance in Finland or if Finland is still responsible for your medical care costs. When you have received the new card, cut the old card in two and destroy it.
