Employment abroad

Persons who work abroad for a maximum of one year usually remain covered under the Finnish social security system. If the work abroad lasts for more than one year, you usually lose your right to coverage under the Finnish social security system.

Please note that if you work in another EU or EEA country or Switzerland, you cannot be covered under the Finnish social security system even if the work abroad lasts for less than one year.

Posted workers and civil servants are covered under the Finnish social security system even if the employment abroad lasts for more than one year. Posted workers should apply for coverage under the Finnish social security system. For civil servants a notification from the employer is sufficient. Family members must separately apply for coverage under the Finnish social security system.

Apply for coverage under the Finnish social security system:

  • with Kela, if you are posted to some other country than an EU or EEA country or a country that has a social security agreement with Finland
  • with the Finnish Centre for Pensions if you are posted to an EU or EEA country, Switzerland or a country that has a social security agreement with Finland.
