How to apply

  1. Complete an application for interest assistance (OT 7).
  2. Enclose with the application documents that show your income during the 4 full calendar months preceding the interest date. The documents must show the gross amount of income and the date of payment. You need not provide any documents about benefits paid by Kela.
    • As of 1 January 2019, Kela obtains salary information from the national incomes register. Kela uses this data when processing claims and applications. You will be contacted if additional information is required.
  3. If you are applying on your own behalf enclose receipts for the interest payments you have made and the notification costs charged by the bank, or a copy of a bank statement. The documents must show the amounts of the interest and the notification costs. If you have paid interest on a monthly basis, provide documentation for the 6 months preceding the interest due date. No such documentation is needed if you want the interest assistance to be paid to the bank.
  4. Scan or take a photo of the application and supporting documents and use the message function at Kela's online customer service to send them.
  5. Alternatively you can submit the application and supporting documents to any of Kela's customer service points.
  6. The decision will be mailed to you. Decisions on interest assistance and information related to these decisions are not available through the online service.

Application period

If you apply for interest assistance on your own behalf, your application must reach Kela by the end of the second month following the interest due date. For example, if the due date is 15 June, your application must reach Kela by 31 August.

If you apply for the interest assistance to be paid to the bank, your application must reach Kela before the due date to avoid late charges. You can submit an application before the bank notifies you of the interest payments.

If you have agreed with the bank to pay interest monthly, Kela can pay only the latest monthly interest instalment directly to the bank.
