Adaptation training course for persons with memory disorders

Kela provides adaptation training courses for persons suffering from memory disorders. The adaptation training is multidisciplinary and group-based.

Rehabilitation course search

When participating in adaptation training, you are provided with support to manage problems in your daily life and help to come to terms with your situation. The purpose of the rehabilitation services provided is to maintain and improve the clients’ ability to work, study and function, and to promote life management and self-care skills. At the course, you are also provided with information about your condition and about rehabilitation practices and support networks available in your area. 

The adaptation training course is suitable for you, if

  • you are over 18 and you have been diagnosed with a mild memory disorder or the early stages of a memory disorder. Such disorders are for example Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease dementia and frontotemporal lobar degeneration.
  • according to your healthcare provider, you are in need of and will benefit from adaptation training
  • you scored at least 18 points in your memory test (MMSE)
  • you have sufficient functional capacity to make it possible for you to complete the course programme. There is an average of 5 hours of guided rehabilitation per day.

The course is not suitable for you, if you need interpretation into a foreign language in order to be able to communicate during the course.

The course is also available in Swedish.

Rehabilitation is arranged for the following target groups:

  • persons under 68
  • persons over 68.

Purpose of the course

The aim of the course is to provide support in the changed situation caused by the disease. You will also receive information and guidance to help you to continue living a life that is as full and meaningful as possible despite your illness. Rehabilitation is also a way of strengthening your resources and life management skills in order for you to be able to function as independently and actively as possible in your everyday life.

Content of the course and implementation

The rehabilitation is implemented as group rehabilitation taking each client’s individual goal and need for rehabilitation into consideration.

The course includes group discussions and working in small groups, a variety of activities as well as individual interviews, meetings and discussions with rehabilitation experts.

The rehabilitation is arranged on the service provider’s premises. The course lasts 5 days. An adult family member or close relative accompanies you throughout the rehabilitation. You can stay overnight at the place of the rehabilitation or travel there from home each day.

The service provider contacts you before and after the rehabilitation.

Course personnel

The course is implemented by the following experts:

  • specialist in neurology or geriatrics
  • registered nurse or public health nurse
  • psychologist or neuropsychologist
  • social worker, Bachelor of Social Sciences, rehabilitation instructor or Master of Social Sciences (major subject rehabilitation science).

Depending on your individual needs, other rehabilitation professionals and assisting personnel may also take part.
