Amount of maternity grant to be increased by EUR 30
The amount of the maternity grant and the value of the maternity package will be increased to EUR 170. The increase applies to expectant mothers whose due date is 1 June or later.
The change will take effect in April this year. Claims for the EUR 170 maternity grant cannot therefore be decided until in April even if they are submitted earlier. The maternity packages will be sent by post to the recipients within 3 weeks of Kela’s decision.
The increase in the amount will make it possible to improve the quality of the products in the maternity package in accordance with the recipients’ wishes.
– Because a competitive tendering process is used, the products for the 2018 version of the maternity package were already selected a year ago. During 2018, the increased amount will therefore be used to include additional products in the maternity packages. The value of these additional products is EUR 30, states Johanna Aholainen, Benefits Manager.
At this stage, it is difficult to know, when the stocks of the 2017 version of the maternity package have run out. Distribution of the new 2018 version will not begin until then. An expectant mother who is entitled to the new maternity grant of EUR 170 may get additional products either with the 2017 or the 2018 version of the maternity package. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 children will be born in Finland this year.
– Each mother will, however, receive products worth the correct amount, Aholainen points out.
If the stocks of the 2017 version of the package run out before the change enters into effect, those who are entitled to a maternity grant of EUR 140 will receive the 2018 version of the package but without additional products.
When your pregnancy has lasted 5 months, you are entitled to the maternity grant. You can choose whether to take the maternity grant in the form of a tax-free lump sum or as a maternity package with products worth the same amount. The package contains care products and baby clothes.
The amount of the maternity grant is decided by the Government, and Kela decides on the contents of the maternity package. The amount of the maternity grant was last increased in 2001.
