Kela at Helsinki Pride: Non-discrimination as part of everyday culture
Kela will again this year be an official partner of Helsinki Pride, Finland’s largest cultural and human rights event. Helsinki Pride will take place between 7 and 13 September 2020.
Participation in the Helsinki Pride Week is part of Kela’s equality, non-discrimination and accountability agenda. Kela has made a strategic commitment to take concrete action to promote non-discrimination.
“Non-discrimination and diversity are important to us at Kela, just as it is important to understand that human beings can differ in many ways”, says Outi Antila, Kela's Director General. “This is something we have to recognise everyday as we work with our customers and engage with our work community.”
A number of staff training events will be organised in the autumn which will focus on diversity among Kela’s staff and customers and how to build it into everyday work.
Last year’s Helsinki Pride week led to the creation of a rainbow network designed to support non-discrimination efforts at Kela. It operates nationwide and is open to all Kela staff members.
Rainbow flags raised at Kela's head office
Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, 12 September 2020, Kela’s customer service staff will deploy to Helsinki city centre to meet with customers and answer their questions. They will carry hand banners and wear black rainbow-pattern caps. There will also be live video on Kela’s Instagram account @kela_fpa starting 1 p.m. on 12 September 2020. It can be watched on Instagram Stories.
Kela’s head office in Töölö will be flying rainbow flags throughout the week. Helsinki Pride will also be featured at select Kela’s customer service points in the form of posters, special info screen content and rainbow lanyards worn by staff members.
