Organisational responsibility

Acting responsibly as an organisation is an important element of Kela's strategy. Strengthening socially sustainable development is central to our operations. We promote sustainable development by addressing the wellbeing needs of our customers, staff and environment and by paying attention to economic sustainability.

Kela has adopted a sustainable development programme. The programme outlines general principles and defines the operational policies through which we are promoting sustainable development in our organisation and in the performance of our responsibilities. The ecological perspective has been strengthened further by means of a separate environmental programme.

We are a participant in sustainable development cooperation at the national level and a member of the Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development. Among the Commission's goals is to promote and monitor progress in meeting the National Commitment to Sustainable Development as part of United Nations global sustainable development goals.

We have participated in efforts to meet the National Commitment and have issued two commitments of our own to sustainable development. The first such commitment is centred around developing the ways of contacting Kela and crystallised in two themes:

  1. We are easily and equally accessible to our customers.
  2. We will reduce our carbon footprint, which is a measure of our paper consumption, paper waste and mail communications.

Reports on the fulfilment of the commitment are issued twice a year. In view of the indicators monitoring the fulfilment of the commitment Kela has been successful in living up to the commitment.

We formulated our second commitment to sustainable development in spring 2017 together with Finance Finland, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the Finnish Transport Agency. The focus of this second commitment is on the digitalisation of medical certificates and doctor’s statements, which will help to reduce our carbon footprint, promote the equal treatment of customers and improve our efficiency. We will report yearly on progress towards fulfilling the commitment.

We also measure progress in sustainable development with other indicators. One such indicator is carbon footprint, which we calculate yearly. Our carbon footprint has diminished from year to year . Other indicators include the increase in online customer contacts and staff evaluations of our success in meeting various responsibility targets.

Kela is also a member of Finnish corporate responsibility network FIBS and has signed the FIBS Diversity Charter. As a signatory to the Charter, Kela commits to review and improve its diversity management and customer service practices.

Events and participation

We participate each year in various events related to corporate and organisational responsibility. One key international event of this kind is the European Sustainable Development Week. Launched at the initiative of the European Sustainable Development Network, it seeks to stimulate and draw attention to various projects in the area of sustainable development throughout Europe.

Kela participated in this event also in 2018. In previous Sustainable Development Weeks, the focus has been on issues such as shrinking our carbon footprint and promoting social sustainability. Further, we have as part of our own operations participated in the national Energy Awareness Week and organised other initiatives in support of sustainable development.
