Apply in time for December’s social assistance payment
Customers should submit their applications for social assistance to Kela in good time so that the assistance can be paid out before Christmas.
The first payment date for social assistance in December is the 1st of the month and the final payment date before Christmas is the 23rd. Customers whose application and other required documents arrive at Kela by 10 December 2020 will have their social assistance payment deposited into their account by 23 December 2020. In order to avoid the pre-Christmas rush, customers are advised to submit their application as soon as possible. Customers who do not expect their income to change over the next few months can apply for social assistance for more than one month at a time as early as November.
Kela issues a decision on social assistance within seven business days of the date when the application was received. However, this requires that Kela has also received all the supporting documents that are needed for the application. If supporting documents are missing from the application, Kela asks the customer to submit them. In such a case, the application will be decided within seven business days of the day on which Kela received the supporting documents that are missing.
Urgent cases are processed separately
If a customer is in urgent need of social assistance, they should contact a Kela customer service point or call the customer service number 020 634 2550. This could be, for example, because the customer has an urgent need for a voucher to buy food or medicines.
If the customer has urgent need of social assistance outside Kela’s office hours, the municipality can after due consideration award preventive social assistance. Customers whose situation becomes critical during the Christmas holiday may contact the emergency social services helpline of their local municipal authority.
The Christmas holidays affect the processing of the social assistance for January
Due to the Christmas holidays there are fewer business days in December than in other months. This should be taken into account when you apply for social assistance for January. The first payment date in January is 4 January 2021. Customers whose application and other required documents arrive at Kela by 17 December 2020 will have their social assistance payment deposited into their account by 4 January 2021.
Customers can check the status of their application by logging in to Kela's e-services at www.kela.fi/asiointi (in Finnish) or www.fpa.fi/etjanst (in Swedish) with their online banking codes or mobile ID.
