Finnish government has approved the Government proposal concerning an increase to the maternity grant. This means that the maternity grant will be increased from EUR 170 to EUR 210. The increase in the maternity grant is linked with the Government’s objective to strengthen households’, and particularly families’, confidence in the future.
The maternity grant in 2026
The maternity grant is granted either in the form of a maternity package or a one-off payment. Kela grants the maternity grant based on the due date of the baby. For adoptive families, Kela grants the maternity grant based on the date on which the child was placed in their care.
If the customer’s due date is on 1 April 2026 or later or if their adopted child is placed in their care on 1 April 2026 or later, they will get either a one-off payment of EUR 210 or a maternity package and a one-off payment of EUR 40 as their maternity grant. Customers who choose the maternity package will also get EUR 40 in cash to make up the difference because the purchase value of the maternity package in circulation at that time is still EUR 170.
When the next edition of the maternity package is put in circulation, customers will get either a one-off payment of EUR 210 or a maternity package as their maternity grant. Customers who choose the maternity package at that time will no longer get the one-off payment of EUR 40 with their maternity package because the purchase value of the new maternity package will be EUR 210.
