Kela reimbursements for certain private healthcare costs to be expanded at the beginning of May
Kela will expand the reimbursements for certain private healthcare costs as of 1 May 2025. Specifically, this applies to reimbursements for fertility treatments, physiotherapy, oral healthcare and gynaecological treatments.
Kela will provide reimbursement for fertility treatments and physiotherapy administered by private healthcare providers from 1 May 2025 onwards. Reimbursements for oral healthcare will be reformed by focusing reimbursements on preventive treatment and the treatment of diseases such as gum disease. Customers will also be reimbursed for up to two oral hygienist appointments a year that are booked without a referral from a dentist.
Kela will confirm the new maximum rates of reimbursement based on a government decree and publish them in list form on its website.
What changes will come into force on 1 May 2025?
Physiotherapy appointments
Kela will reimburse customers for up to four physiotherapy appointments during the same calendar year. These appointments do not require a referral from a doctor. Kela does not provide reimbursement for any other physiotherapy appointments beyond these four even if the customer has a referral from a doctor.
Dental care
Customers will be reimbursed for up to two oral hygienist appointments a year that are booked without a referral from a dentist. As before, customers who have a referral from a dentist will be able to claim Kela reimbursement for up to 15 appointments with a dental hygienist over the span of two years. Kela reimbursement for a dental and oral health examination will also be available once every two years as before.
Gynaecological treatments and fertility treatments
Kela will provide reimbursement for the costs of fertility treatments prescribed by a gynaecologist in cases where infertility is caused by a medical condition and the applicant is under the age of 43. Reimbursement may be granted on a case-by-case basis to persons aged 43 or over. The reimbursements available for gynaecological treatments have also been increased.
