Income limits for general housing allowance

Because housing allowance is for those on a low income, there are income limits. If a household’s income before taxes is higher than this limit, no housing allowance is available. A household typically comprises the persons sharing living quarters.

General housing allowance reduced in 2024, will no longer be available for owner-occupied homes starting in 2025

Parliament has approved cuts to the general housing allowance, which will reduce the rates of the allowance in 2024. Most of the changes to the general housing allowance will take effect on 1 April 2024. The changes will be applied to general housing allowances currently in payment the nexttime they are reviewed. General housing allowance will also no longer be available for owner-occupied housing as from 1 January 2025.

Examples of income limits for the general housing allowance in different municipalities

The examples below show the income limits for general housing allowance which apply to households with up to 5 persons. If there are more than 5 persons in your household, the income limits applicable to your household will be higher than those shown in the examples. If a household’s income before taxes is higher than the income limit shown below, no housing allowance is available. The income limit depends on the number of adult and child members of the household. The EUR 300 deduction from earnings has been factored in.

One-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 1 adult, the income limit is EUR 2,119 per month
  • 1 adult + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 2,986 per month
  • 1 adult + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 3,777 per month
  • 1 adult + 3 children, the income limit is EUR 4,454 per month
  • 1 adult + 4 children, the income limit is EUR 5,072 per month.

Two-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 2 adults, the income limit is EUR 2,851 per month
  • 2 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 3,642 per month
  • 2 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 4,319 per month
  • 2 adults + 3 children, the income limit is EUR 4,967 per month.

Three-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 3 adults, the income limit is EUR 3,507 per month
  • 3 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 4,184 per month
  • 3 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 4,802 per month.

  • 1 adult, the income limit is EUR 2,073 per month
  • 1 adult + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 2,903 per month
  • 1 adult + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 3,651 per month
  • 1 adult + 3 children, the income limit is EUR 4,299 per month
  • 1 adult + 4 children, the income limit is EUR 4,898 per month.

Two-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 2 adults, the income limit is EUR 2,768 per month
  • 2 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 3,516 per month
  • 2 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 4,164 per month
  • 2 adults + 3 children, the income limit is EUR 4,763 per month.

Three-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 3 adults, the income limit is EUR 3,381 per month
  • 3 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 4,029 per month
  • 3 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 4,628 per month.

  • 2 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 3,061 per month
  • 2 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 3,672 per month
  • 2 adults + 3 children, the income limit is EUR 4,237 per month.

Three-adult household

If the household consists of

  • 3 adults, the income limit is EUR 2,926 per month
  • 3 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 3,537 per month
  • 3 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 4,102 per month.

  • 3 adults + 1 child, the income limit is EUR 3,284 per month
  • 3 adults + 2 children, the income limit is EUR 3,837 per month.
