Intensive multidisciplinary individual rehabilitation

You may have the right to intensive multidisciplinary individual rehabilitation organised by Kela if you have a condition, illness or disability that makes your daily life very difficult and if other types of rehabilitation, such as mental health therapy, are not helpful enough. Another condition is that you need rehabilitation for your condition, illness or disability for at least one year.

The aim of multidisciplinary individual rehabilitation is to improve or maintain your ability to manage your daily life and to work and study. The rehabilitation includes both individual and group-based programmes.

  • individual rehabilitation without a specific medical focus or for persons with neurological disorders.

How rehabilitation works

Rehabilitation is offered on the service provider’s premises. You can stay overnight there. If your friend or family member participates in your rehabilitation, they will usually stay in the same room with you if necessary.

What kind of rehabilitation you get during the rehabilitation period depends on your personal needs and goals. A multidisciplinary team of professionals is in charge of your rehabilitation. The team can include, for example, a specialist doctor, a registered nurse, a physiotherapist and a psychologist or a neuropsychologist.

Duration of rehabilitation

You will be given rehabilitation for 5–20 days depending on your personal rehabilitation needs. If you are in the first stages of your illness or condition, you may also get 5 days of adaptation training first. If your rehabilitation programme lasts for more than 10 days, we recommend for it to be split into many shorter periods.

Costs of rehabilitation

You do not have to pay anything for the rehabilitation. In addition, you may have the right to rehabilitation allowance for the duration of your rehabilitation. Kela can also reimburse you for rehabilitation-related travel costs.
