What is OmaKela?

OmaKela is Kela’s e-service for individual customers. It is available in Finnish, Swedish and Sámi. You can use OmaKela to access Kela’s services at all times no matter where you are. You can use OmaKela on your computer or smartphone.

Decision notices and letters delivered primarily via OmaKela

If you use OmaKela and you have given us your email address or phone number, we will not send you paper copies of decisions or letters by post. You can only view them in OmaKela. You will get a notification when you have a new decision or letter available in OmaKela.

In OmaKela, you can

After you log in to OmaKela, you will see the status of your most recent activities and contacts with Kela on the front page. For example, you can see if your application is still being processed or if Kela has already issued you a decision. You can also choose what language you want to use OmaKela in. The options are Finnish, Swedish and Sámi.

How to log in to OmaKela

  1. Type kela.fi/english in your browser’s address bar.
  2. Select Log in – OmaKela on the front page.
  3. You will be directed to the Suomi.fi e-identification page. Choose how you want to identify yourself.
  4. Enter the required information, check that it is correct and choose Jatka (Continue) to go to OmaKela.

Identification methods

Online banking credentials (pankkitunnukset) are an identification method issued by banks. You can use them to log in to the OmaKela e-service. Please ask your bank for the credentials and instructions on how to use them. Use only your own credentials.

How to use online banking credentials to log in to OmaKela
  1. Select Log in – OmaKela at the top of the kela.fi page.
  2. Choose your bank on the identification page.
  3. Select the identification method you want to use to log in to OmaKela, such as your bank’s mobile application or a code card issued by your bank.
  4. If the identification process is successful, you will be automatically redirected to OmaKela.

Mobile ID is a phone-based method of identification. You can use it if you have a mobile phone and a SIM card that supports the use of a Mobile ID. Contact your operator to get a Mobile ID.

Please note that your operator may charge a fee for activating your Mobile ID. Contact your operator to check how much it costs. Kela does not charge a fee for the use of Mobile ID.

How to use Mobile ID to log in to OmaKela
  1. Select Log in – OmaKela at the top of the kela.fi page.
  2. On the next page, select Mobiilivarmenne (Mobile ID).
  3. Enter your phone number.
  4. You will get an identification request from Kela. Check that the identification request is the same as the one you can see in your browser. Click or tap OK.
  5. Enter the PIN code for your Mobile ID on your phone screen.
  6. If the identification process is successful, you will be automatically redirected to OmaKela.

You can use an identity card to log in to the OmaKela e-service if it has a Citizen Certificate (kansalaisvarmenne) and you have activated it. How to apply for an identity card (poliisi.fi).

You can also use the Hightrust.id application when you want to verify your identity. In that case, you do not need a card reader. The application works on mobile devices, and it uses your identity card’s information. How to activate the Hightrust.id application (suomi.fi).

Common European means of identification (elDAS) (suomi.fi) is a method of identification that residents of other EU countries who are not Finnish citizens can use to log in to OmaKela.

How to log in to and use OmaKela
  1. Select Log in – OmaKela at the top of the kela.fi page.
  2. Select Ulkomaalaisen tunnistustavat (Identification methods for non-Finnish citizens) and use your country’s identification method to log in.
  3. After you have verified your identity, you will land on a customer service page where you can
    • send a message to Kela asking for advice or for Kela to contact you
    • send applications or supporting documents to Kela.

You can download Kela’s application forms in PDF format on our Forms page. Most forms are available in English. Fill in the application form as accurately as possible. The form may contain questions that only apply to Finnish citizens. For example, citizens of other EU countries do not need to provide a Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus).

Remember to log out of OmaKela after your session. If you use a public computer at a library or a Kela service point to access OmaKela, remember to clear the browser’s page history and cache before you close the browser.

Acting on behalf of another person in OmaKela

You can use the OmaKela e-service to manage someone else’s affairs on their behalf. You need a mandate or authorisation if you are acting on behalf of another adult over the age of 18. You will usually not need a mandate or authorisation if you are acting on behalf of your child who is under 18. If the child has their own online banking credentials or Mobile ID, they can use OmaKela to manage their affairs independently.

When you want to act on behalf of another person, first log in to OmaKela with your own credentials. Then select Asioi toisen henkilön puolesta (Act on behalf of another person) on the front page. Please note that some limitations apply to what you can do on behalf of another person in OmaKela. We are constantly developing OmaKela, and new functions will be introduced in stages.

How to update your information in OmaKela

Keep your information up to date to make sure your use of Kela’s services runs smoothly.

  1. Go to Päivitä omia tietojasi (Update your information).
  2. Under Omat tiedot (My information), you can
    • update your phone number or email address
    • give Kela permission to send you messages
    • choose how you want to get decision notices and letters from Kela and in which language
    • change or update information related to your partner.
  3. Under Tilinumerot (Bank account numbers), you can update your bank account number to make sure we pay your benefits to the right bank account.

If you move to a new address, submit a move notification to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (dvv.fi). Kela gets your new address directly from the Population Information System.

Sending messages in OmaKela

You can contact Kela by sending messages in the OmaKela e-service. You can write your message in English, but you may get a reply in Finnish. Go to Lähetä ja lue viestejä (Send and read messages) or Oikopolut (Shortcuts) in OmaKela to access your inbox. Sending a message in OmaKela is safe, and your data will stay secure.

You can also send messages in OmaKela when you are acting on behalf of another person.

You can use the message function in OmaKela to:

  • ask questions about your own benefits
  • ask for advice in non-urgent matters
  • send more information to us.

You have to give us permission if you want us to send you messages in OmaKela. After you have given your permission, you will get a notification by email or text message when you have a new message in OmaKela.

How to give Kela permission to send you messages

  1. Go to Päivitä omia tietojasi (Update your information).
  2. Select Omat tiedot (My information) – Viestit OmaKelaan (Send me messages in OmaKela).
  3. Select Kyllä (Yes) as your reply to the question Saako Kela lähettää sinulle viestejä OmaKelaan? (Can Kela send you messages in OmaKela?)
  4. Choose if you want to be notified of new messages by email or text message.
