Training try-out – support for finding the right field of study for you

Are you looking for the right field of study but your medical condition or disability is making it difficult? A training try-out may help you make sure that the field you have chosen is right for you.

A training try-out is one of the many vocational rehabilitation services Kela can offer. Read more about vocational rehabilitation for young persons if you are 16–29 and your functional capacity has declined significantly for some other reason than a medical condition or disability and you do not have a job or a place of study.

What is a training try-out?

When you participate in a training try-out, you get to experience the field of study you have chosen in practice. You will see what kind of studies it involves and what the studies cover. This will help you see if the field you have chosen matches your expectations and if you have what it takes to study it. You will also get help with planning your studies.

Training try-outs are usually carried out at an institute of vocational education or an institution that offers vocational special needs education and training.

The training try-out is free of charge for you.

Who is the try-out for?

A training try-out may be a good option for you if

  • you are a young person or an adult of working age
  • you need help with choosing your field of study
  • you are not sure if the field you have chosen is right for you in practice.

You can get vocational rehabilitation offered by Kela if

  • you have a medical condition or a disability that significantly diminishes your ability to work or study
  • you have little work experience and you cannot get vocational rehabilitation from an authorised pension provider
  • you want to continue to work to the extent that your health allows.

What is a training try-out like?

A training try-out can last for up to 10 days. The number of days depends on your needs and the options offered by the educational institution you have chosen.

During the try-out, you will

  • find out what it is like to study your chosen field
  • see if the field you have chosen is right for you
  • talk to teachers and guidance counsellors
  • get guidance on matters related to the studies.

How to apply

If you want to apply for a training try-out, you need a medical statement B (B-lausunto) from a doctor or some other kind of medical documentation that has the same information as a medical statement B. Before you apply for vocational rehabilitation from Kela, you must also choose the field of study and contact the educational institution you want to try out to agree on the training try-out.

Once you have a medical statement B or other medical documentation and you have agreed on the try-out with the institution, do as follows:

  1. Fill in the application form for vocational rehabilitation KU 101e (PDF).
    • Save the blank form to your device. Do not fill in the form directly in the browser because some of the information may not be saved that way.
    • Open the form with Adobe Reader and fill it in.
    • Save the completed application form on your device. Note that the application must be in PDF format.
  2. Send the application in the OmaKela e-service (available in Finnish and Swedish).
    • Log in to OmaKela and select Tee hakemus (Submit an application).
    • First select Sairastaminen ja kuntoutus (Sickness and rehabilitation). Then select Kuntoutus – tee hakemus (Rehabilitation – Submit an application). Finally, select Ammatillinen kuntoutus (Vocational rehabilitation).
    • If you send your application in OmaKela, you do not need to sign it.
  3. If you have supporting documents, send them via OmaKela after you have submitted your application. If they are paper documents, you can photograph them.
    • Send us a copy of your medical statement B or other medical documentation as a supporting document with your application.
