The European Health Insurance Card will be mailed to you within two weeks. If you cannot get the card in time before your travel, you can request a certificate provisionally replacing the card. The certificate is valid for the duration of the stay abroad, but at the most for one year.
If the mother has a European Health Insurance Card and her new-born child does not have a card, the child can receive medically necessary treatment for a user fee that corresponds to the fee paid by local residents only as regards treatment necessary during childbirth or immediately afterwards (e.g. intensive care for premature babies). As regards other treatment, the child must have its own European Health Insurance Card or a certificate provisionally replacing the card.
The card is renewed automatically
The European Health Insurance Card is valid for a maximum of two years. You will get a new card automatically if you are still covered for health insurance in Finland or if Finland is still responsible for your medical care costs. When you have received the new card, cut the old card in two and destroy it.
