Neuropsychological rehabilitation

The purpose of neuropsychological rehabilitation is to improve rehabilitation clients’ ability to work and study and to help them progress in their studies, remain economically active, and enter or return to working life.

You may qualify for neuropsychlogical rehabilitation if you are between 16 and 67 years of age and your ability to work or study is constrained by such factors as

  • dyslexia or visual processing disorder associated with a developmental disorder
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • mixed developmental disorders.

Neuropsychological rehabilitation may also be necessary after

  • cerebrovascular disease
  • brain injury
  • encephalitis
  • other diseases that cause damage to the central nervous system.

Kela provides access to neuropsychological rehabilitation for one year at a time. You can get neuropsychological rehabilitation through Kela for up to three years.

Neuropsychological rehabilitation must always be preceded by a neuropsychological assessment. The assessment is used to determine the nature of the handicaps faced by the examinee, and the extent, degree, level of impairment and treatability of developmental learning problems and neuropsychological disorders.

The rehabilitation is provided according to a plan drawn up on the basis of statements by a neuropsychologist and a specialist physician, and approved by Kela. Typically, the rehabilitation is arranged as individual rehabilitation but can be group based. The need for group rehabilitation is evaluated during the neuropsychological assessment.
